Demere Kitunga is a Tanzanian feminist, publisher, and literacy advocate renowned for her dedication to promoting feminist ideology, social change, and literacy as tools for empowerment. As the founder of Soma Book Cafe, she envisioned and created a vibrant platform for interaction, learning, and collective growth. Through her work Demere has created platforms such as Vavagaa, aimed at challenging patriarchal norms and promoting gender equality through storytelling and community engagement and Kestoria Kavazi—a feminist storytelling archive that preserves and elevates women’s lived experiences, feminist movements and herstories. Under her guidance, Soma continues to serve as a dynamic space where ideas flourish, marginalized voices are amplified, and new possibilities for a just and equal society are imagined.
